Pre-Plan but don't Pre-Paid

What is it all about?

A preneed funeral is the arrangement and payment of a funeral, by entering into a contract with a funeral service provider prior to death. Other words that are used interchangeably with preneed, include "pre-paid", "pre-plan" and pre-arrangement". Preneed funeral contracts are prevalent in the US and many developed countries.

The Sales Pitch

Preneed plans for funeral services and goods are marketed aggressively, the main sales pitch used for selling preneed plans revolved around two things: you will save your loved ones the burden of making hard decisions during the time of grief, and your loved ones are protected against inflation by "locking-in" today's funeral price.

Pitfalls

There are many pitfalls with preneed or pre-paid funerals. You can read the following articles from:

Yes to Pre-Plan

It is ok to pre-plan but don't pre-paid. You can pre-plan by discussing with family members, and making your wishes known to them, e.g. cremation or burial, and the preferred type of religious rites etc.

No to Pre-Paid

Instead of paying someone else for goods and services that will only be delivered many years later, you can set aside the required funds in an account where you are able to exercise complete control.
